By the time you read this, The Walking Dead’s zombie apocalypse companion series — which we’re still gonna call a “spin-off” in headlines because that’s shorter — may already have a finished script.
At Comic-Con, executive producer Gale Anne Hurd told Zap2it that Robert Kirkman and co-writer Dave Erickson were expected to deliver a script at “any moment.” Several moments have passed since Comic-Con, where RK also mentioned that some companion series news should be coming pretty soon. "I’m doing something with it almost every day," Robert told CinemaBlend. "It’s taking a while, but it’s not taking longer than anticipated."
The series is still expected to premiere in 2015 on AMC, and even though it feels like not a whole lot has been said about the project since it was announced in September 2013, Gale told Zap2it, “we’d rather have it right than right now.” That’s probably a good plan. And there is plenty of time. After all, the cast and crew are currently shooting scenes for Season 5 that will probably air in late November 2014. So 2015 stuff probably has to sit on the backburner.
Gale reiterated the few details that are already out there — that the companion show will not feature any of the existing TWD cast, nor will it follow comic book characters, and it won’t be set in the same area. However, Zap2it added the tiny tidbit that the new series might not follow TWD’s ensemble format. "Given that the world lends itself to having multiple characters, I don't know that it's going to be as large an ensemble," Gale said. "I'm sure that we'll be following more than one [character]."
That’s not much information, and it sounds like things are still in the early stages in general, but at least it’s something. And it’s not a bad something, if they do decide to pare things down. TWD’s cast is currently huge — 12 characters in the train car; Gareth, Mary and the Termites; Beth and her new hospital group; Carol, Tyreese and Judith on the train tracks; new guy Gabriel; and Morgan, if he’s still clearing that block. And we’ve been told even more characters are joining the group in Season 5. Who knew that many people were even alive in the ZA?
We’re putting our faith in Robert, Gale and the other writer/producers to give us a companion series that's at least close to as good as TWD. So they should take all the time they need to. But hopefully they don’t need much more time to announce a few new details!
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
